A couple of things are very important to me when it comes to consulting and consulting services.

The first is that it must be value add and that it must make a difference to the individual or organisation in question. Good consultative practices change conversations and in turn, lead to changes in respective behaviour. As a former CEO, I expect this of others and as a consultant, I demand this of myself.

Secondly, relationships and specifically the depth of relationships (client and consultant) are critical for success. When someone genuinely cares about making another person or party better, they will proactively challenge and stretch them to new levels. This is only possible from positions of mutual trust. When this occurs, breakthrough and transformational can be a beautiful thing.

Creating a climate and catalyst for needed change through a clear, compelling and inspirational strategic plan. Sounds easy. It is not. I have done this for 30 years now and I believe I know what works and definitely, what does not.

Regardless of your strategic choices, undeniably, culture is the leading driver of breakthrough opportunity. Clearly articulated (and measurable) behavioural dimensions can catapult even sub-par strategic choices. Please never forget this..

Inspirational Leadership

Average leaders manage and exceptional leaders lead. As a Chair, Board, CEO, leadership or functional team, unless you can inspire, you will never get the most from your teams. Inspiration does not happen overnight nor does it happen from charisma. It is about creating a high performing team culture that is aligned behind purpose, vision and strategic intent. It is also achieved through authentic leadership and best mastered through humility - others ahead of yourself. Always.
